Buncombe County Register of Deeds Office Quilt Show Call for Artists
In celebration of our rich regional craft heritage, HandMade in America and the Buncombe County Deeds Office are working in collaboration to create a regional quilt exhibition entitled “Mitered”. This exhibition is to be on display in the Deeds office at 35 Woodfin Ave County Office lobby for 6 months, which receives thousands of visitors each week. To be considered for this exciting opportunity, please submit a completed exhibition entry form.Quilts will be hung on the lobby walls and therefore must feature some sort of hanging system (often a sleeve that accommodates a dowel or metal rod, sewn into the top back of the quilt). A dowel rod and sleeve must BOTH be provided. The wall they are suspended on is 70” in height, so a quilt must be no taller than 70”. And the wall is at least 18 feet in the air, so smaller, detailed quilts are not ideal—they will get lost. Items must be available for display for a period of six months. If items are for sale, artists will receive 75% of the selling price. All featured work will have information on the quilt and the artist on display in the lobby.
To submit work for exhibition you must live/work in one of the 25 Western North Carolina counties we serve. If you are a member of HandMade in America at the Artist Level or above, entry is free. Accepted exhibition entries are due by Friday, June 28 at 5 pm. Work must be available for exhibition from June 28, 2013 – January 5, 2014. HandMade is seeking quality, innovative, handmade work by local western North Carolina craft artists. We are searching for both traditional and contemporary quilt works with an emphasis on regional culture and heritage. Each artist may submit up to 3 pieces per entry for consideration.(You only need to pay $10 for up to three pieces submitted if not a member.) Submissions should include no more than two images of each piece for a maximum of six images total. Images should be submitted digitally as jpegs 4” x 6” (approximate) with 300 dpi. Please be sure to include a completed entry form with your submission.
Requirements for participation:
•Must live/work in the 25 counties we serve in Western North Carolina
•$10 standard entry fee, or FREE at the $45 Artist Membership or above
•Up to 3 quilts and 6 total images 4” x 6”, 300 dpi or higher quality
•Vertical height no taller than 70”
•Must have a way to hang on display (dowel) and dowel must have holes at the ends to hang using monofilament
•Must be available to remain in the exhibit from June 28, 2013-January 5, 2014
•Entry form and images submitted no later than June 17, 2012 at noon
•Items will be exposed to the open air (indoors) for 6 months
•Items will be suspended on a wall 18’ in the air, so small works will not be visible.

Breaking Ground: Innovative Craft

Breaking Ground: Innovative Craft features the work of WNC craft artists who are pushing the boundaries of their medium in unexpected ways. Featuring 26 works in clay, fiber, glass, metal, wood or mixed media, the pieces in this exhibit illustrate a balance of craft processes and unique ideas, combining tradition with innovation.
Juror Kathryn Gremley, Director of the Penland Gallery & Visitors Center, has curated and installed exhibits at the Penland Gallery since 1996. She is an accomplished juror and curator, specifically in regards to craft mediums. With her discerning eye, Breaking Ground: Innovative Craft promises to be just that.

HandMade Curated Exhibits: Past Exhibitions
Flux : A Craft Exchange
November 30, 2012 - February 22, 2013
HandMade in America has been working with Flux Studios of Mt. Rainier, Maryland, a suburb of Washington D.C., to exchange exhibits in an effort to share new ideas and demonstrate the importance for artists to stay abreast of national trends. Flux Studios resident artists will be exhibiting work at HandMade in America while artists from the Odyssey Center for Ceramic Arts will be showing at Flux Studios; these handcrafted items will travel nearly 500 miles.
Flux Studios is an arts space in Northeast DC that houses the studios of six professional sculptors, a large classroom space and an informal exhibition gallery. The underlying concept behind Flux is one of exploration, experimentation and dialog among its members and the greater arts community. Odyssey Center for Ceramic Arts is an Asheville-based school and studio which promotes the understanding, appreciation and professional development in the ceramic arts.

From Hand To Hand: Functional Craft in WNC

HandMade in America is currently hosting the exhibition From Hand To Hand: Functional Craft in WNC in its downtown office gallery space from August 24 through November 16, 2012. This exhibition celebrates craft artists living in the 25 counties of Western North Carolina as listed on our website. The theme of the exhibition is functional craft objects. Craft is defined as made from clay, glass,fiber, metal, wood, recycled/reused materials, and natural products. We are very excited to display the outstanding talents of craft artists in Western North Carolina! We welcome all to visit From Hand To Hand: Functional Craft in WNC through November 16th.
HandMade in America is located at 125 S. Lexington Ave, Suite 101. Our doors are on Hilliard Ave. between Church St. and S. Lexington Avenue.
Under Cover Quilt Exhibition running until January 2013
HandMade in America is teaming up with Drew Reisigner and the Buncombe County Register of Deeds office to make the downtown offices a better place to visit. Drew Reisinger, Buncombe County Register of Deeds, reached out earlier this year to Handmade in America in an effort to make this government building a more welcoming space for the staff and visitors of the Buncombe County offices, located at 35 Woodfin Street in downtown Asheville.
In celebration of our rich regional craft heritage HandMade in America and the Buncombe County Deeds Office worked in collaboration to create a regional quilt exhibition entitled “Under Cover”. This exhibition is on display in the 35 Woodfin county office lobby, which receives thousands of visitors each week.
Craft as Object
This exhibition celebrates exceptionally made objects using traditional craft materials of clay, fiber, glass, metal, wood, and recycled materials. Over 100 entries from all over Western North Carolina were juried, resulting in the 25 objects selected for the exhibition.
Language as Craft
Artists describe finished works with carefully selected language, but can craft depict language when words are chosen before the act of physical expression? Inspiration was found by a community of local WNC artists, by asking just that. February 13 through May 4, 2012, HandMade in America presents a collection with distinctly different artistic process. In Our Own Words: Language as Craft features eleven local craft artists that share the results of this creative experiment.Personally-resonant words chosen by each artist as the impetus for making the object. “We find not the phrasing to describe our work, but rather the craft to depict our language”, says one of the artists. From fine furniture and woven sculpture to exquisitely created wall pieces, In Our Own Words is a playful exhibit with visual, verbiage and vital messages.
Artists featured in this exhibition are: Fatie Atkinson, Caryl Brt, Hayley Davison, Melissa Engler, Carla and Greg Filippelli, Wayne Fowler, Susan Link, Journel Thomas, Jenna Weston, and Jamie Womack.
Other Opportunities
HandMade in America coordinates educational exhibits featuring the crafts and craft history of Western North Carolina. Currently we curate exhibits at the I-26 Visitor's Center, located on I-26 East in Madison County, NC. These exhibits are arranged in partnership with the NC Department of Transportation and rotate on a bi-annual schedule.
Travelers can see local craft artists work, learn about the regions cultural heritage, discover opportunities to see artists at work in their studios, and visit nearby galleries.
