This course will introduce students to finishing and small repairs. Students will learn to take old family heirlooms and turn it into something new for the next generation. Students will be expected to bring reasonably sized object to work on such as chair, vase, lamp pedestal, picture frame, or other small objects. Various paint supplies easily found at local hardware store will be used in process. Upon completion, students will learn a specific finish for a specific decorative function. Instructor: Western North Carolina master wood finisher and industry paint specialist, Dexter Adams. The finishing workshop is designed to accommodate working professionals with lecture and studio times Friday evening and all day Saturday.

Catawba Valley potter Kim Ellington, will be giving a one day workshop entitled Making Larger Pots: Capping and Joining Techniques, on Saturday, February 18, from 9:00am to 4:30pm. The workshop is open to the public and will focus on the capping and joining techniques that a potter uses to create large, decorative and functional pieces. Students will learn water borne solvent finishing processes. Students will be introduced to industry standard regulations to assure proper procedure. Each student will be given an array of wood species options to create four or more finishing swatches. Learned techniques such as antiquing, glazing, cracking, and veiling may be used on wood objects such as turned bowls, lamp pedestals, or chairs.
