Farm to Fashion

HandMade in America's newest exhibition is Farm to Fashion-- a display of the fiber community in Western North Carolina from farmed animals to clothes and home decor. The exhibit will open November 28 and run through January 25.
HIA will celebrate the exhibit with a networking event Dec. 16, to sync with the screening of a “Farm to Fashion” documentary film being produced by a class at Western Carolina University.

Textile Study Group

Monthly meetings take place third Wednesdays from 5:30-7:30 and are open to the public and will be held at 5:30pm at our offices. To see a detailed schedule, click here.

The first meeting is January 18 on the topic "Textiles and Natural Dyes in India" led by Catharine Ellis:
Last year Catharine Ellis, textile artist and educator, was invited to be part of a team presenting a workshop in West Bengal, India. Eighteen master artisans and dyers travelled from all over India and Ethiopia to participate in a 5 day masterclass on natural dyes led my Michel Garcia of France. Her own role during the workshop was to introduce woven shibori to the weavers of the group Catharine will talk about that workshop and some of the artisans she met while traveling in India.

Craft Labs

There will be no January Craft Lab.
February's Craft lab will take place Monday, February 13 from 6-8 instead of our usual 2nd Tuesday time-- Spend Valentine's Day with your loved ones! The topic will be How to Tell your Story
Telling stories is how we identify, learn, and share our history. If your goal is to educate, persuade, or simply connect in a meaningful way with a particular audience, storytelling is the single most powerful communication tool available to you and can be your best selling tool. Come learn how to tell your story as a craft maker. Executive Director, Gwynne Rukenbrod will teach you the importance of learning how to tell your unique story and hone your skills at story telling. Gwynne will talk about the three steps in a good story and group exercises will lead you through each step of YOUR story.

Craft Labs will return to the regular 2nd Tuesday schedule in March. Click here for upcoming craft labs.
